Iceland has over the last decade become a favourite destination for VIPs and celebrities, and no trip to Iceland is complete without a visit to the famous Blue Lagoon.  A man-made, mineral-rich geothermal spring, this popular attraction is situated in the island’s south west on the Reykjanes Peninsula.  It is located close to Keflavik airport, where shuttles depart for the lagoon every 15 minutes.

A visit to the Blue Lagoon is an invigorating way to start off the day after an early morning arrival, not to mention an excellent way to pass the time while waiting for your hotel check-in in the postcard-worthy capital of Reykjavik. Readers of Conde Naste Traveller voted Blue Lagoon as the best spa worldwide and National Geographic selected it as one of the 25 wonders of the world.  Travelers are enthralled by the famous turquoise-hued water of the Lagoon where one can enjoy the fresh air, the dramatic landscape and even a cool Skyr smoothie while relaxing in the warm seawater.

Welcome to The Retreat

As one of the country’s most visited attractions, the Lagoon is often filled to capacity. So how can a VIP traveller experience the wonder of this scenic and beautiful attraction without the crowds? The answer may well have arrived in the form of a new onsite hotel.   The Retreat is set to open its doors this April as Blue Lagoon’s own luxury property and Iceland’s first five-star hotel and spa resort.   The hotel promises a high-end experience with access to an exclusive, private lagoon which is set apart from the public attraction.

The Retreat is surrounded by its own radiant and mineral-rich lagoon, making it a luxe destination of its own.  The property is built into an 800-year-old cooled lava flow on the south shore of the Blue Lagoon and features a subterranean spa along with luxury accommodations and dining.  The Retreat Lagoon taps into the same source of sky-blue seawater as the main Blue Lagoon and is powered through the same eco-friendly geothermal energy source.

Spa

The Retreat Spa is carved into the property’s rocky subterranean walls, forming a series of interconnected chambers and hidden sanctuaries where guests can indulge in a truly restorative and rejuvenating spa experience. The spa boasts a lava rock-heated steam room, an invigorating cold air well, fire pit, dry heat sauna and relaxing nest chairs to lounge in on the viewing deck.  A highlight of the spa journey is the Blue Lagoon Ritual which includes a sequenced treatment of algae, mineral salt and silica. The Retreat Spa can be pre-booked for the ultimate experience in serenity and privacy.
